"Malai Khutrukai Paryo" (often extended as "Malai Khutrukai Paryo Jethan Timro Bainile") is a monumental masterwork in early Nepali folk music, written, composed, and originally recorded by Master Mitrasen Thapa Magar. The song's title translates colloquially to "I am completely smitten" or "captivated," taking the form of a humorous, lighthearted, and flirtatious dialogue addressed toward a brother-in-law (Jethan) regarding an intense infatuation with his sister (Baini). Rooted in the rich social textures of the traditional Nepalese diaspora, Mitrasen skillfully intertwined conversational wit with a vibrant, bouncing acoustic rhythm. By utilizing early gramophone recording technology in Kolkata during the late 1920s and 1930s, he gave this regional folk composition a permanent audio format, successfully preserving the distinct colloquial phrasing and playful romantic dynamics of rural village life.
Decades after Mitrasen’s era, the track remains an irreplaceable pillar of Nepal’s musical heritage, continually finding new life across generations. Its widespread historical impact was famously cemented in 1995 when it was adapted by composer Shambhujeet Baskota for the critically acclaimed historic Nepali movie Prem Pinda, exposing the classic to a whole new generation of modern listeners.
