Deepa Narayan Jha (née Gahatraj) is an accomplished Indian playback singer, stage performer, and film producer who has left a significant mark on regional and mainstream South Asian music. Born in the hill station of Darjeeling, she was raised in a musical household by her mother, a radio singer, and her father, an intelligence officer. After graduating from South City College in Calcutta and working briefly as an air hostess for Air India, she decided to fully pursue her lifelong passion for vocal music. As a highly versatile vocalist, she has demonstrated the rare ability to record and perform music in nearly 20 different Indian languages. Her extensive career includes singing popular tracks for major regional film industries, most notably making a prominent name for herself in Bhojpuri cinema and Nepali music, alongside producing the critically acclaimed Bhojpuri film Kab Hoee Gawana Hamar which went on to win a prestigious National Film Award.
Beyond her independent musical achievements, she is widely recognized as part of one of Bollywood’s most celebrated musical families. She married legendary Indian playback singer Udit Narayan in 1985, balancing her own artistic pursuits while acting as a foundational pillar of support during his rise to superstience in the Hindi film industry. The couple's only son, Aditya Narayan, has carried forward this musical legacy, establishing himself as a prominent Bollywood singer, actor, and popular television host. While she has often chosen to step back from the aggressive media spotlight to prioritize her family, she remains an active stage artist.
