Basudev Munal was a legendary radio personality, veteran folk singer, and cultural icon who profoundly shaped Nepalese broadcasting and traditional music. Born in Biratnagar in 1949, Munal launched his career at Radio Nepal and dedicated nearly four decades of service to the national broadcaster. He is most fondly remembered as the beloved host of the popular children's program "Baal Karyakram", which he anchored from 1974 to 2002. Through his charming voice, storytelling, and custom-written children's plays, he became an essential household fixture and shaped the childhoods of multiple generations across Nepal.
Beyond his iconic work as a radio presenter, Munal was a highly accomplished vocalist whose soulful duets and solo tracks remain timeless gems of Nepali folk (Lok) music. Alongside his frequent musical partner Pandav Sunuwar, he delivered massive hits such as "Babari Phool Ko Bot" (Jham Jham Istakot), "Pani Khane Niule", and "Lalupatey Hulera Lal Bhayo". After retiring from broadcasting, he faced serious health challenges, surviving a brain hemorrhage and later battling throat cancer. The revered artist passed away at the age of 68 on September 28, 2017, leaving behind a rich artistic legacy that stands as a foundational cornerstone of modern Nepalese audio history.
