Deepak Thapa is a legendary Nepali singer, composer, pioneer guitarist, and arranger. He is highly revered as an influential figure in the golden era of modern Nepali pop music (Adhunik and Neppop). Born in Bhairahawa, Thapa spent a formative part of his childhood in Hong Kong, where he formally studied classical guitar at the prestigious Tom Lee Music Centre. Upon returning to Nepal, he brought a refined melodic sensibility to the local music scene. He became a prominent member of the iconic band The Prism. While widely celebrated as the mastermind behind the timeless solo masterpiece "Bidesh Jane Mayalu Timilai," he has also been a prolific creative force behind the scenes. He composed and arranged major chart-topping tracks for numerous renowned artists, including the beloved song "O Mero Priyatam" sung by Sukmit Gurung.
In recent times, the respected musician has been facing a severe health battle, having been diagnosed with Stage 5 chronic kidney disease. Due to his prolonged illness and the requirement of undergoing intensive dialysis multiple times a week, Thapa has had to step away from his active musical career. His medical team has advised that a kidney transplant is essential for his full survival and recovery. To manage the immense medical expenses and support his treatment, the global Nepali music community, fellow independent artists, and organizations like the Calgary Magar Association have united to organize international fundraising campaigns on platforms like GoFundMe. Despite these immense physical hardships, Thapa remains deeply resilient and optimistic, driven by a steadfast desire to return to the studio and create music for his listeners once he recovers.
