"Pahenlo Batti Muni" (Under the Yellow Light) is a prominent Nepali experimental rock and progressive indie pop band formed in Kathmandu in October 2015. The group’s distinctive name stems from an intimate band origin story: during their early years, members Rochak Dahal and Pravesh Thapa Magar frequently jammed under the dim, yellow glow of a candle due to the severe daily load shedding plaguing Nepal at the time. Known for their deeply personal songwriting, the band currently consists of vocalist and guitarist Rochak Dahal, guitarist Pravesh Thapa Magar, bassist Kus KC, and percussionist Lav Jung Chhetri. They quickly gained a dedicated following by blending authentic, soulful Nepali folk-infused rock elements with introspective lyrics that attempt to make sense of internal human emotions and external societal structures.
The band solidified their presence in the independent Nepali music scene with the release of their critically acclaimed debut studio album, Asthir (Unstable), launched in May 2019. Through standout hit tracks like "Lori", "Bari Lai", and "Ma Baato Hidejhai", Asthir explores personal and collective themes of instability, human vulnerability, and existential questioning. Rather than adhering to conventional commercial structures, their music features expansive, slow-building instrumental arrangements that highlight complex guitar work and evocative poetic verses. This commitment to non-commercial, expressive storytelling has cemented Pahenlo Batti Muni as an essential pioneer of modern Nepalese alternative and progressive rock.
