Laxmi Prasad Joshi, widely recognized as LP Joshi, was a legendary Nepali folk singer, songwriter, and actor who dedicated his life to preserving and promoting Nepal's rich cultural heritage. Born in Dhankuta, he later settled in Damak, Jhapa, where he spent decades traversing the countryside in search of authentic, traditional village tunes. Often referred to as the "Folk Song Emperor," Joshi recorded dozens of enduring tracks with Radio Nepal, bridging the gaps of time by making indigenous sounds accessible to a national audience. He is also credited with popularizing the traditional indigenous musical instrument known as the Binayo throughout the country.
Joshi's musical legacy is defined by iconic, evergreen hits like "Riting Riting Nabajau Binayo", "Ollo Kholo Pallo Kholo", and "Kanchhi Matyang-tyang", which remain deeply embedded in the hearts of music lovers. Beyond his immense vocal contributions, he showcased his versatility as an actor, starring in several foundational Nepali films including Hijo, Aja, Bholi. After decades of unparalleled contribution to national art and literature, the revered artist passed away at the age of 88 in July 2024 in his hometown of Damak. His death was widely mourned as an irreparable loss to the nation, prompting tributes from top leaders, including Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who celebrated him as a true pioneer of Nepali folk culture.
